Trendy or healthy: Drinking clay?

Beauty demands sacrifices, but this is a really dangerous one!

Beauty industry and celebrities often come up with new crazy ideas to lose weight, be healthy, or get rid of toxins in your body. You never know what's the next "trend to follow."

I thought I cannot be suprised by anything anymore. I was wrong.

A new health trend, Bentonite Clay drinking has definitely suprised me.

After I've checked out this diet, I’ve learned that using of medicinal clay in fact goes back to prehistoric times. The first recorded use of medicinal clay goes back to ancient Mesopotamia. Nowadays, wide variety of clays are used for medicinal purposes, but primarily for external applications. Bentonite clay is a type of clay found in volcanic ash.

According to the trend followers, drinking clay or bentonite: - Apparently detoxifies the liver and colon

- Aids weight loss and digestion and boosts the immune system

- The clay swells to 12 times of its original volume in the stomach, banishing hunger.

How do you imagine this in practice?

While most women began an eating reform, exercise, and counting the calories, others took a more radical approach: started to drink clay to lose weight.

These others can buy medical clay tablets or powdered clay in health food stores, which can be consumed with juices.

But this trend is not risk-free!

Risk 1. Internal use of bentonite clay can cause intestinal discomfort, and detox “secondary side effects” which include headaches, muscle pain and joint stiffness .

Risk 2.Medical experts say there is no evidence that clay can remove toxins from the body or even lead to long-term weight loss.The effect is only temporary!

Moreover, our body does not need help in excreting waste.

Our skin, lungs, kidneys, colon and most of our liver are working continuously to detoxify the body!

Risk 3. In theory, bentonite clay is an inert material, it cannot be absorbed by the body. But certain pollutants in it can be!

The American Food Standards Agency has issued a warning about the dangers of consuming some clay-based products, after finding dangerously high arsenic (a potential carcinogen) and lead (a toxic heavy metal) levels in some supplements.

Because this is not a medicine, the production and sale of this goods are not strictly regulated and controlled

Risk 4. When bentonite clay passes through your colon, it absorbs some toxins. But clay is not picky! It absorbs the useful elements too: vitamins, minerals, essential fats, and amino acids. So you can easily get to the state called "qualitative hunger."

To polarize the issue: Do you want to be skinny or healthy?

So what's my advice?

Bentonite is commonly used parallel with psyllium husk or other fiber supplements. This fibers can’t be digested by the small intestine but are broken down and act like a sponge in the intestinal tract. This advantage of fibers is well known and recognized by official medicine for a long time already.

I think, you should "use" fibers alone. Large quantity of them are easily available from vegetables and fruits. These plants are low-energy-density foods but they are high in micronutrients. These are the perfect diet foods. Moreover, we can prepare them in many ways. Besides vegetables, unrefined grains (oats, wheat germ, brans, millet, quinoa, etc.), pulses and nuts provide you larger amount of fibers. A healthy diet contains a combination of lean protein as well.

Follow a vegetable-based diet and complement this by avoiding additives and too much alcohol, cutting out simple carbohydrates (e.g. refined grains), white sugar (e.g. beverages) and too much fat (e.g. fast foods), especially trans fatty acids.

The best way to weight loss and detoxification is to take care of yourself, your diet, and your whole way of life constantly. Believe me, it's only difficult at the beginning.
